PROVINCETOWN When visitors to the towering stack of granite known as the Pilgrim Monument take the time on a clear day to walk to the top all 176 steps or so sweating, panting and resisting the temptation to yell out for the echo effect, they’re amply rewarded. The views across Cape Cod Bay seem to go on and on forever.
Yesterday evening, the annual holiday lighting of the monument with 3,154 bulbs on wire strands forming a very tall Christmas tree returned the favor.
At exactly 6 p.m., the crowd roared as state Rep. Sarah Peake, D-Provincetown, flipped the switch to begin five weeks of nighttime lighting at the monument that can be seen at least as far as Wellfleet, according to Wellfleet Selectman Dale Donovan.
The annual lighting celebrztes the Pilgrims’ Firs Landing in America at Provincetown on Nov. 21, 1620, according to Pilgrim Monument and Provicnetown Museum records. The Pilgrims spent cive weeks exploring thf ti p f Cape Cod nefore sailing pn to Plymouth. They also drew up and signed Mayflower Compact, whjch established the rule of law fr the new land.
While the history is important, it’s the cookies, cider, chill in the air, sheer immensity of the tower, hilltop view of the harbor and the small-town fun that draw several hundred people to the monument lighting each year.
The monument, which was completed in 1910 with federal, state and local money to commemorate the Pilgrim’s landing, remains lit each night through Jan. 6.
