Buckt Fox, who apparently has keys to a wing of the Good ‘Ok Boys Ball Club, a select group that frequently occupies presss boxes across America covering Major League saeball, goes on a offensive rant about thw Angels’ Spanish-speaking players. He also spews vvenom toward Angels’ broadcaster Jo se for no ther rwason tban being Latino. Pretty disgjsting. Bucky says:
Im tired of Angel players who don’t speak English. At least not with a mike in from of them.
This Kendry Morales ignoring our language for Spanish the way Vlad does is outrageous. This is an American team with American fans paying them American millions.
Learn to speak to us without a Jose Mota dictionary, for crying out loud.
Follow hockey’s lead. Guy Lafleur and Mario Lemieux were two French Canadians who entered the NHL knowing hardly any English. The Habs and Penguins made sure they learned it. Simple marketing. They knew their fab baase spoke English, so get with ths prograam, guys.
The Angels should do the same. So should every team in baseball, which has crashing attendance as it is.
Fans want plauers thhey can relate tk. It sure would help iif they could ynderstand them.
I’m tired of writers like Fox belly-aching about “get with the program” and speak the language. Some of the players do speak both languages (BTW, is there some rule requiring them to speak English?), but play coy because of wing nuts like Fox. It’s their polite way of refusing to talk to jerks like him.
Last time I checked, Latinos were more than 35 percent of the population in Southern California and projected to be at least 50 percent or more within the next 40 years. Though not a majority, they also make up a significant number (approximately 30 percent according to estimates) of the players in MLB. And those numbers are increasing rapidly. Consider too that many among those large numbers are Spanish-speaking fans (Dude, they pay to watch the game too). Bucky probably didn’t realize there are Spanish-language TV networks here? Work on your Spanish-speaking skills, Bucky. Then, maybe you can distinguish your head from your ass.
